Many of our patients are already taking effective steps toward keeping their mouths happy and healthy, yet we are sometimes asked if there is more that can be done. If you already brush and floss regularly but are still concerned about decay, there are extra steps you can take to help prevent cavities.

Drink Water Regularly
There are so many benefits to drinking plenty of water, and getting enough hydration each day is crucial to many of your body’s basic functions. Drinking water regularly, however, will also greatly benefit your oral health. Water washes away bacteria and plaque that build up inside the mouth, and it also increases saliva production to help keep your teeth healthy and strong. Additionally, drinking water consistently will help you avoid being tempted by sugary beverages such as soda and fruit juice, which can be very harmful to teeth.
Visit the Dentist Regularly
Most people know that visiting the dentist every six months is recommended as part of your overall dental care, but we also encourage patients to see our office more often than twice a year if they have additional concerns. Having a routine cleaning and dental check-up every three or four months can help put your mind at ease and give you more opportunities to have your mouth examined and checked for any red flags.
Rinse With a Fluoride Mouthwash
Brushing and flossing daily is necessary protection against cavities. For an extra safeguard, rinse vigorously every night with a fluoride mouthwash. Mouthwash has multiple benefits in addition to fighting cavities, including freshening your breath and fighting periodontal disease. Alcohol-free options are best.
