How can I encourage my child to brush their teeth?

how do i get my child to brush their teeth | Albuquerque, NM | Essenmacher Family DentalWe all know that brushing twice daily and flossing at least once per day are keys to good oral health; however, anyone with children will tell you it can be a struggle to get kids to brush their teeth properly. Often, kids will just do a quick once-over, which is not enough to remove bacteria and the acids that cause decay. We have even heard stories of kids wetting their toothbrushes to be sneaky without brushing at all.

Your children’s dentist in Albuquerque, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher, has a few suggestions to make life easier for parents.

Brush Together for Fun

With busy schedules, parents often wish they could spend more time with their kids. Set good habits by brushing together. YouTube and other video websites have catchy videos that encourage brushing for a full two minutes. You and your little one can enjoy a teeth cleaning dance party together.

Be Sure to Help Little Ones

Kids will need assistance brushing their teeth until their motor skills develop enough to do it on their own – usually around age eight.

Keep a Chart and Give Prizes

Kids love prizes. When your child does a good job brushing his or her teeth, give a reward at the end of each week. To protect the teeth, make sure it is something other than candy or sugar.
