Why do my gums look like they are shrinking?

Gum Treatment in Albuquerque, NM | Essenmacher Family DentalIf your gums appear to be pulling away from your teeth and exposing the darker roots, you might be experiencing gum recession.

Gum recession is fairly common, but should not be ignored. If you have ever heard the term “long in the tooth,” it is because gums tend to recede as we age, and it is synonymous with being older. In reality, gums can recede at any age, and if you have noticed changes to your gums, it’s time to book a dental exam in our Albuquerque dental office. Gum recession can develop for a number of reasons:

Misaligned Teeth

Teeth that are crooked and do not come together correctly when you bite down can cause uneven force around the mouth, which can cause gums to recede in specific areas in addition to causing chipped or broken teeth.

Gum Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease leads to recession in some cases. If you notice painful or burning gums, or if your gums bleed when you clean your teeth, Dr. Lindsay Essenmacher and our hygiene team can help get your oral health back on track.

Brushing Too Hard

The tips of your toothbrush bristles do the cleaning and are effective at removing plaque and food particles. Too much pressure can damage delicate gum tissue, especially when gum disease is already present. Brush thoroughly without pressing too hard. If your toothbrush bristles look frayed, you are brushing too hard.
